Answers to
FAQ's:
1) What are Adult Day Services (Adult Day
Care?)
If a relative falls
ill with Alzheimer’s disease or some other chronic, debilitating illness, many
families may feel as if they have only two options for care: either have someone
in the family take on the role as full-time caregiver, or place their loved one
in a nursing home. Other options exist that represent a middle ground between
these two difficult extremes. One such option is Adult Day Services.
Adult Day Services
are the fastest growing segment of the community based-care market. It is
growing so rapidly because of the aging of America’s population and the desire
of families to keep older loved-ones at home and in the community. Adult Day
Services is a program that is designed to meet the needs of adults with
functional or cognitive impairments through an individual plan of care. These
programs offer a cost effective alternative to nursing home placement with the
goal of improving the client’s ability to remain independent. The typical
Adult Day Health Center provides nursing care and health services, meals,
transportation, and therapeutic activities in a safe and structured
environment. Individuals who participate in an Adult Day Health Center attend
on a planned basis during specified hours for as few as two days a week. Adult
Day Centers generally operate during normal business hours five days a week,
some on Saturdays. They assist clients to remain in the community, enabling
families and other caregivers to continue the care at home. It also provides
much needed respite for the caregiver.
