developmental & intellectual disabilities
For clients with developmental and intellectual disabilities, Active Day medical adult day care centers offer an individualized program of therapeutic and engaging activities that provide opportunities for mental and physical stimulation. Our services are well suited for individuals who are no longer in high school or a sheltered workshop environment. We work with school transition teams and other organizations to continue the client’s developmental and educational curriculum in our centers.
A major focus of our care plan for young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities is reinforcing skills, especially those that are useful in daily living and will improve the client’s independence. For older clients, we provide less structured activities tailored to their energy levels.
Our highly experienced RNs, LPNs, personal care assistants and activities staff are trained to address the needs of low functioning and nonverbal clients by using body language, facial expressions and behavioral cues to interpret their understanding of and response to activities and situations. For those who exhibit poor impulse control or who struggle to sustain appropriate social interactions, we take special measures to adapt the environment or activities to accommodate the client’s needs.
