Autism

At Active Day medical adult day care centers, we focus on preventing unnecessary institutionalization for clients living with autism. Our services are well suited for individuals who are no longer in high school or a sheltered workshop environment. We work with school transition teams and other organizations to continue the client’s developmental and educational curriculum in our centers.

One of the biggest challenges for adults with autism is engaging in normal relationships with others due to language impairment, inability to interpret nonverbal communication cues and lack of shared interest with peers. Through corrective behavioral therapies, we can help these clients learn to function more effectively at home or in the community.

Because the likelihood of improvement in condition is dependent upon specialized instruction, we emphasize personal attention for our clients. Our approach is centered upon providing:

  • Clear instructions
  • Prompts to perform specific behaviors
  • Immediate praise and rewards for performing requested behaviors
  • A gradual increase in the complexity of reinforced behaviors
  • Definite distinctions between when and when not to perform learned behaviors

We also work as a team with families in the development of behavioral techniques so they can take an active role in the client’s care and treatment at home.

In addition, our staff work with the client’s physician to manage medications prescribed to treat specific symptoms such as seizures, hyperactivity or extreme mood changes. We monitor the effect of these medications on the client’s behavior and well-being, communicating our findings to the physician so that the type or dosage of medication can be adjusted as necessary.
