Alzheimer's disease

At Active Day medical adult day care centers, we provide quality care for clients who are living with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

To help slow the deterioration of memory, language and reasoning abilities, we engage clients in activities and reminiscing exercises that provide mental stimulation when appropriate. We also reorient the client frequently to center facilities and our staff in order to minimize confusion and disorientation.

Many individuals with Alzheimer’s also experience behavioral symptoms, such as irritability, anxiety, depression and agitation. Our approach to managing these types of symptoms includes providing a structured environment, redirecting the client’s attention, simplifying common tasks and routines and allowing adequate rest between stimulating activities.

For clients who are prone to agitation, Active Day staff have been trained to intervene with appropriate responses in order to reduce their stress levels. We focus on identifying the underlying causes of agitated behaviors like repetitive movement, wandering and inability to follow direction and developing ways to minimize these behaviors. We also work as a team with families in the implementation of these behavioral management techniques, so they can take an active role in the client’s care and treatment at home.

In addition, our staff can administer medications as prescribed, monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment and relaying this information to the client’s physician, caregivers and case manager.
